Tymoshenko's defense prepares to appeal 7 year prison term

16:32 20/10/2011

KIEV, October 20 - RAPSI. The defense attorneys of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko have prepared an appeal against the October 11 judgment sentencing her to seven years in prison, Tymoshenko's counsel Serhiy Vlasenko said on Thursday.

According to Vlasenko, the appeal takes into account the violations committed during the investigation and the trial.

"We have collected the basic and the grossest violations made during the investigation and the judicial proceedings," Tymoshenko's website quoted Vlasenko as saying.

The appeal acceptance deadline is October 26.

A Kiev district court sentenced Tymoshenko on October 11 to seven years in prison for abuse of power in signing gas contracts between Ukrainian Naftogaz and Russian Gazprom in 2009 and ordered her compensate Naftogaz for losses. The judge declared that Tymoshenko abused her powers when she served as prime minister and issued directives regarding gas contract negotiations in Moscow, which were not properly documented, and without the government's consent.
